A map of the US states you have visited

TripStow's US states map shows every state you have been to, filled in for you from your past trips. The airports, stations, hotels and cruise ports in your bookings put their states on the map, and you tap any others by hand. It is free, and it is for anyone who has ever wondered how many states they have been to.

It counts out of 50. Washington DC can be marked too, and is shown on top of the 50 rather than as a 51st state.

How does it work?

  1. 1

    Add your trips

Forward your booking emails, or import your flight history from TripIt (via OpenFlights), Flighty, LogMyFlight, myFlightradar24, OpenFlights or a CSV file.

  2. 2

    Your states fill themselves in

Where each past journey started and ended, and where you stayed, is placed in its state. An airport where you only changed planes is left out.

  3. 3

    Tap the rest

Road trips and visits that never had a booking: tap the state on the map, or tick it in the list. Each tap is saved straight away.

  4. 4

    Earn badges and share

Level up State Collector, finish regional badges like New England, and share a "My US states" card.

How do I work out how many states I have been to?

Open the US states map in TripStow and the number is at the top, out of 50, with "+ DC" after it if you have been to Washington DC. The states your trips reached are counted before you tap anything, so you only need to add the ones without a booking.

States from your trips stay filled in. States you tapped by hand can be tapped again to take them off.

Which states count as visited?

A state counts when one of your past trips started, ended or stayed in it: an airport you flew from or to, a station, a port, or a hotel. A change of planes does not count, so a connection in Atlanta on the way to Florida does not add Georgia.

Only past travel counts. A trip you have booked for next year adds its states once you have been.

Which US state badges can I earn?

The badges sit with your other TripStow badges, and each one shows what is left to go, for example "Vermont and Rhode Island to go".

  • State Collector, in levels at 5, 10, 25, 40 and all 50 states
  • New England: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut
  • West Coast: California, Oregon and Washington
  • Four Corners: Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado
  • Great Lakes: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York
  • Deep South: Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina
  • Off the Mainland: Alaska and Hawaii
  • Coast to Coast: one state on the Atlantic and one on the Pacific

Share your states

The "My US states" card shows your map and your count, in square, story and wide sizes for Instagram, WhatsApp, X and Facebook. It only ever shows places you have already been.

Part of your travel map

One switch at the top of TripStow's map moves between the world map, your flags, your countries, US states and Canada. Countries you want to visit next go on your travel wishlist.

Questions people ask

How do I make a map of the US states I have visited?
Sign up to TripStow free, forward your booking emails or import your flight history, and open the US states map: the states your trips reached are already filled in. Tap any other state you have been to.
Does Washington DC count as a state?
No. TripStow counts out of the 50 states. You can mark Washington DC as visited, and it is shown on top of the 50, as "+ DC" next to your count.
Does changing planes in a state count as visiting it?
No. An airport where you only changed planes, with your next flight leaving from it within 12 hours, does not add its state. If you left the airport, tap the state to add it.
Can I add states I drove through?
Yes. Tap any state on the map, or tick it in the list, to add it by hand. Road trips and visits without a booking count the same as states from your trips.
Is the US states map free?
Yes. The US states map, the count, the State Collector and regional badges, and the share card are all on TripStow's free plan.
