The best apps to track your travel

A travel tracker keeps a record of where you have been: a map of countries, the trips themselves and, in some apps, your flights. The real difference between them is how that record gets filled in. Some follow your phone's GPS while you travel, some build a journal from your photos, some are ticked by hand, and one reads your booking emails.

These are the main options, with prices and platforms checked on each company's own site, UK App Store or Google Play listing. TripStow made this page and is one of the apps listed, so every description is factual and cited.

TripStow

Best for tracking every trip and flight automatically from your bookings, past trips included, with no GPS.

TripStow builds your trips, your scratch-off map and a lifetime flight log from the booking emails you forward, so it never tracks your phone and trips from years ago count as soon as you forward or import them. Each country is coloured by how you got there (air, sea or overland), and every flight adds distance, hours, airports, airlines and the planes you flew on to your stats. Upcoming trips get an itinerary too.

Polarsteps

Best for tracking a trip by GPS as it happens and turning it into a printed book.

Polarsteps follows your route by GPS during a trip, even offline, and adds the countries to your map. Trips can be printed as Travel Books. It does not read booking emails.[1][2][3]

FindPenguins

Best for free automatic route tracking with posts, photos and a printed book.

FindPenguins' Travel Tracker records your route automatically, battery-friendly and offline, and you add posts, photos and videos along the way. Trips can become a hardcover travel book.[4][5]

Journi

Best for turning trip photos into a private story and a photo book.

Journi groups your photos into a trip story by their time and location, with text, maps, weather and flights. It builds the journal from photos rather than live GPS tracking, and sells printed photo books.[6][7]

Visited

Best for ticking off countries, regions and cities, with bucket lists.

Visited maps countries, with Premium adding regions and cities, more than 175 travel lists and itineraries. You add places by hand; it does not use GPS or read photo locations.[8][9]

been

Best for a quick, simple map of countries and US states.

been is a long-standing, simple tracker: tap the countries and US states you have visited and share the map. Premium adds regions, cities, airports, a 3D globe and a timeline.[10]

Skratch

Best for a scratch map of countries, cities and sights, with travel extras.

Skratch is a scratch-off map of countries, cities and attractions with stats and widgets, plus a visa checker and eSIMs.[11][12]

How we chose

We included active apps whose main job is keeping a record of your travels with a map, grouped by how they fill it in: GPS while you travel (Polarsteps, FindPenguins), your photos (Journi), by hand (Visited, been, Skratch) or your bookings (TripStow). Facts come from each company's own website, UK App Store or Google Play listing on 22 October 2026, cited below.

Questions people ask

What is the best app to track all my travels?
It depends how you want the record filled in. Polarsteps and FindPenguins follow your route by GPS while you travel; Visited, been and Skratch are ticked by hand; Journi builds trips from your photos. TripStow fills in every trip and flight from your booking emails, including trips from years ago.
Is there a travel tracker that does not use GPS?
Yes. TripStow builds your trips and map from the bookings you forward, Journi uses your photos' time and location, and Visited, been and Skratch are filled in by hand. None of them needs to track your phone.
Can a travel tracker add trips I took before I had the app?
GPS trackers only record trips while the app is running. With TripStow you can forward old booking emails or import a flight log, and those trips count on your map and stats. Hand-ticked apps let you add past countries yourself.
What is the best free travel tracker app?
All seven apps here have free plans. FindPenguins says it is entirely free; TripStow's trips, map and lifetime stats are free, with Pro adding live flight alerts and more. You can also try a free countries visited map without an account.
Which travel tracker apps also track flights?
TripStow keeps a full flight log with distance, hours, airlines and aircraft. Journi can add flights to a trip story. For flight logs on their own, see the best flight log apps.
